DivX crashes Safari

Every time I try to watch a video online which is in DivX Web Player it never loads and eventually crashes Safari.

Can anyone help me resolve this problem please?

Assuming you're using Snow Leopard, try running Safari in 32-bit mode. Right-click on Safari and select Get Info. Check the "Open in 32-bit mode". It is very possible that there is a problem loading DivX if Safari is run as a 64-bit application (which it is by default).

I cant see anything to do with changing which "bit" to open Safari in?

What Mac do you have? Which version of OSX? The 64-Bit option in Safari will only be in 10.6 Snow Leopard. If you do have 10.6 then you open the Applications Folder and right click on Get Info and there you should see a place to put a checkmark for Open in 32-Bit Mode.

MacBook Pro OS X Version 10.5.8

This is a screen shot of the info window of Safari, how come the check box isn't there?

Because, 10.5 is not a true 64-Bit OS and Safari only runs in 32-Bit mode. 10.6 Snow Leopard was the first OSX to have mostly 64-Bit Apps with that option.

So in other words, that is not your issue with Divx crashing.

Edit: I just noticed Vansmith even said IF you are running Snow Leopard.

Indeed. The 32/64 bit option is only present in Snow Leopard as pre-SL versions were only 32-bit applications. So, as dtravis7 said, that's not the issue here. Let's start with the absolute basics - have you tried to reinstall DivX?

Bushi 01-31-2010 01:32 PM

I've tried to reinstall it, but I don't know where it is? It's not in the applications folder, I thought it would be in a plugins folder for Safari or something?
