Hi all mac-users! First of all, is this in the right place?

Second, I recently downloaded Gimp. However, when I open it, it sits there. No menus, no open windows, nothing. Just a useless icon on the dock. Suggestions?

Edit: I take that back. I do see a "Gimp" menu, but that's all.

Did you download from here:-

Overview

The link also includes access to the OS X forums pages. Is it possible you got the Windows version?

Yes, that's where I got it from. I don't think it's the Windows version, it was a .dmg file. I'll try it again, though.

No, should I?

UPDATE: I downloaded the DMG again, and when I try to open it, it says that it failed to mount.

That version of X11 is so antiquated it would be useless. On the same token, you probably do have it installed. Check /Applications/Utilities. I think it came as part of the default install for Leopard and SL.

EDIT: Indeed I was right. If you look at the download page, you'll see that it states that, "Leopard: X11 shipped with Leopard".

I'm not sure I understand. Why do I need X11 to run Gimp?

The GIMP is written using a toolkit (very simply put, the libraries for UI elements) that requires X11. It uses GTK which is an X11 toolkit. Don't worry about the technical details (unless you want to). Just know that it is required.

Your installation dvd should have "other" applications, or some such. Try installing from there, and then check for updates.
