Apple - Support - Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard Mail
If you're getting a ? on the icon, sounds like you've either moved or deleted the Mail.app. I cannot be held responsible for the things that come out of my mouth. In the Windows world, most everything folks don't understand is called a virus. Place your vote for our Member of the Month |

If Mail is not one of the apps listed that you can install individually from the disk, you'll need Pacifist to extract the single app from the install pkg without re-installing the OS.
edit: try what wmprice suggests below before you get Pacifist. I cannot be held responsible for the things that come out of my mouth. In the Windows world, most everything folks don't understand is called a virus. Place your vote for our Member of the Month |

Try looking in the Trash to see if you inadvertently deleted the app. The Trash is represented by the Trash can icon on the far right (depending on how you have your dock positioned) of the dock. Select this and it will open a Finder window. If the app is there, simply copy it back to the Applications folder.
If it's not there try using Spotlight to see if it can find if it has been moved to another location on the system. Mac 101: Spotlight Last edited by wmprice1240; 09-26-2009 at 11:31 PM. Reason: clarity |

It wasn't in the trash. I empty it from time to time. I used the OSX reinstall disk to reinstall the apps only. Now when I try to open the mail it tells me this version of mail can't be used with the vesion of OSX I have. I checked to see if any software udates were available but there weren't any. Will I still need to use pacifist?

Ah, ok, that's a bit different. Do this.
Close Mail. Drag the old Mail icon off of the dock. You should see it disappear with a puff of white smoke. Now open Mail from your hard drive. Once the application is open right click on the icon that should now be showing in the dock. You should see an option 'Keep in Dock'. Select this. Close the app. The icon should remain. |

It won't open from the HD. I have to go into show package contents-contents-macos-mail. Only after all this does my account open. This same path is also how I created the account. When I close the mail folder the icon leaves the dock and my mail closes. If I try to open mail from the hd I get the same message that this version of mail can't be used with this version of the os.
