itunes crashes macbook

Hey--
I have a 3-year old macbook that has started freezing every time I open iTunes. The problem started when I updated to the latest version. The problem became so bad from my constant manual rebooting that it affected start-up. I deleted that user account and started another with a older version of iTunes which seemed to kind of fix the problem for about a week and it stopped starting up completely. I reinstalled using the discs and deleted iTunes completely, but I would very much like to find a way to use iTunes again--I have not had great luck using the alternatives like Songbird. I'm using Cog now and pretty much hate it.

Any help would be appreciated.
