Best place for you to start would be the Java Tutorial itself:

Online Training and Tutorials

Of course, you don't have Notepad on the Mac. Any text editor would suffice (MacVim, TextEdit etc), but you may want to look at Eclipse which is a free, open source Java IDE:

I would suggest Eclipse as well, and this website. This would be of some help to you as well.

Eclipse is a good IDE for Java but if you decide to stick with TextEdit and Terminal, make sure that the file you save with TextEdit is saved as plain text. To ensure this, when you open TextEdit, go to Format > Make Plain Text. If you don't, the contents of the file will have added text. For example, let's say I want to save the following to a text file: Hello World!. If you save as rich text (the default for TextEdit), the following will be the real contents of that file:
Code:
{\rtf1\ansi\ansicpg1252\cocoartf949\cocoasubrtf540
{\fonttbl\f0\fswiss\fcharset0 Helvetica;}
{\colortbl;\red255\green255\blue255;}
\margl1440\margr1440\vieww9000\viewh8400\viewkind0
\pard\tx566\tx1133\tx1700\tx2267\tx2834\tx3401\tx3968\tx4535\tx5102\tx5669\tx623
6\tx6803\ql\qnatural\pardirnatural

\f0\fs24 \cf0 Hello World!}
As you can see, there is more there than there should be and Java will not understand this extra content. If you make TextEdit work with plain text, you will not have this extra rich text content added.

If you wish, you can certainly code in vi (not so user friendly, but has the advantage of being on EVERY unix system out there) Mastering the VI editor) or nano (think pico) (there's yer 'out of the box' terminal options)...

That being said, I so much prefer a visual IDE.
