MacBook - Mail 3.0 to Gmail

Can anyone help with a query re connecting Mail 3.6 to Gmail?

I have all my Gmail settings straight and mail is being downloaded to my Mail but cannot Send anything - keep getting the following message:

The server “smpt.gmail.com” cannot be contacted on the default ports.

Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be delivered.

Anyone have any ideas what might be happening?

Much appreciate any help

You misspelled the smtp server. You have smpt.gmail.com and it should be smtp.gmail.com.
