In my experience, Safari 4 is much faster than Safari 3, which was much faster than Firefox. WebKit (Safari), IMHO, is much faster than Gecko (Firefox) which is much faster than Presto (Opera).
Javascript speeds are also considerably better in Safari than the other browsers in my testing. So, if you visit a lot of Ajax heavy websites, Safari is the way to go.
