Mail causing latency issues

Been noticing my system slowing way down these last few days. Usually when I'm doing something in mail. Like replying to a message- I'll get the beach ball and everything else will run slow. I have 1.25GB of memory so I'm wondering if it's something else. I mean it has to be. Any thoughts on what to check? Thanks Oh, also forgot to mention that since this problem has been happening I've been noticing a lot more activity from the cooling fan.
