iChat preferences = NO TABS!

when I'm in ichat and i hit preferences, all I can see are audio/video preferences, but there are no tabs at the top of the screen that allow me to look at any other preferences. how do I get the tabs back?

Macintosh HD/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iChat.plist
