Raid 1 question

Good Afternoon,

If an external RAID 1 is used on an iMac and the HD goes down in the desktop unit, will the 2 disks in the external RAID array still allow the desktop to function or will losing the main disk on the desktop render the computer useless until the drive is replaced?
