I don't know what you're referring to in the Windows volume control, but why not just mute VLC (by using its "built-in" mute) by itself?
Hope I explained that cogently enough

No, he wants to mute Firefox, not VLC. In Windows, there is a volume control panel that lets you adjust the volume level of every open program individually. I don't think OS X has a similar feature. But speaking as a Windows user, I've never used the feature and I've never felt the need to.

However, I'm not sure why you'd need to mute Firefox... maybe if you use a web-based chat client.

I work as a proofreader so I'm good at interpreting really badly written sentences.

Your original post was very confusing because you didn't use any punctuation. It should have looked more like this:

"Hi guys! I was just wondering something. I know a lot of people like to argue that grammar and spelling aren't so important on the Internet, but at some point it gets so difficult to understand that most people will misinterpret what you type.

My god, how do you do it? I despise proofreading my own stuff, let alone other people's work. You sir/madam, have incredible patience.

It's sir, and I don't really know. I just have a great attention to detail. I have trouble remembering "important" stuff but I have a huge repository of trivia. Grammar, punctuation, and spelling have always come naturally to me.

I don't see how the OP's post was difficult to decipher. Then again, I was an English major and an Editor, so I guess I'm also used to poorly written sentences.
