Hi All,

Are there any apps to move an application to the menu bar?

I have some apps that I require to be on all the time (i.e. LittleSnapper, Tags) However I never click on these apps in the dock and I use ALT + TAB alot and I would prefer these apps to remain permanantly hidden.

Does this make sense?

You can have them startup automatically and be immediately hidden in System Preferences => Accounts => Login items tab.

Liquid and computers don't mix. It might seem simple, but we see an incredible amount of people post here about spills. Keep drinks and other liquids away from your expensive electronics!

The problem with "hiding" an app is that it still shows in the Dock... just faded a bit to signify that's its "hidden", and it's still in the ALT-TAB menu. I quite frankly have never understood the point of the "hidden" feature. It looks the same to me as simply closing the window but leaving the app running. *shrug*

A good solution is to dig into the App's package and modify a pref file buried in there. There's an app called Dock Dodger that will actually do this for you. If you want to do it the hard way, read through this discussion about it. Be sure to see updated info for 10.4 and later down lower in the discussion.

EDIT: BTW, I forgot to state exactly what my suggestion does exactly. It keeps your app's icon off the Dock and ALT-TAB bar even while it is running. Basically it runs invisibly. Downside is you can't access any of its features unless you have set a system-wide hot key to access it.

Standing request for all troubleshooting: Please provide your Mac model/year and OS version. Also advise us if you have used or installed any antivirus, security, or "cleaning" software on your Mac. If you have installed MacKeeper in particular, you are hereby advised to uninstall it.

when an app is hidden it doesn't show up in the dock as minimized and when you tab into the app, it shows the window

Hmmm. I experimented with that and see what you mean. I guess that would come in handy if you have a very cluttered Dock. *shrug*

thanks, for all your replies.

I know how to open apps at login. I just didnt want to TAB through many apps that have menubar and dock icons, and I never need to click on the docks.
