Could anyone tell me what software to use to create pdf documents from my work? Preferably freeware...

well, if youre using photoshop, illustrator, indesign, or any other design apps, they can export as a pdf. or if you have adobe acrobat pro, you can author pdfs from other formats. or you can drop a file into preview and export as a pdf.

Actually it's even easier than that. In any application goto the File Menu and Choose Print. From there click the Save as PDF button on the bottom of the print dialogue. And there you're done!

Converting to PDF is built into OS X
