Adobe - special characters

In Illustrator somehow the keystrokes for special characters are overriding standard ones. Ex. - typing shift+; gets Ñ instead of :. Not sure if his problem is systemwide yet but very strange. Any ideas?

n/m...guy had his spanish palette activated and it was overriding his keystrokes. User error.
