importing movies from external drives into iDVD

It seems as though I searched everywhere for this information and I came up empty handed. I have many movies (.mov format in 1280 x 720) on an external drive. I don't like to keep them on my primary hard drive, because as you can imaging, they take up quite a bit of space.

Is there a way to import them directly into iDVD without copying them do the movies folder or importing them into iMovie?

hold on mate what are you trying to do?
are you trying to watch your movies that you have on your hard-drive?
you should just be able to open them up with vlc player that you can download by looking it up on google and then opening your movies in that

I have a bunch of movies on an external hard drive, and I am trying to use iDVD to create a DVD to give to family. In fact, I have VLC, but it's not what I am getting at. For clarification: I am trying to use iDVD, and not the DVD Player.
