Is a .Mac account pretty much the same as mobile me ?

As the title says Is .mac essentially the same thing as mobile me ? If not how do they differ ? I am getting an iphone in the next month or two and know that the mobile me thing is pretty cool and i will want link my phone, mac, address book etc but will .Mac work the same way or offer anything different thank you in advance |
