Hello,

I was searching for some Macintosh games, and I came through some website that said "You can now play Windows-based games on Macintosh OSX using Cider", I made some research and found that Cider is made by TransGaming. So I wanted to know if any one here ever tried it before? If it actually works good, or even does what it is supposed to do, then I'll definitely buy it. Running windows-based games on macintosh osx would be pretty cool, and since my MBP's specifications aren't that bad, lots of games I'd like to play will run smoothly here. Waiting for some feedback about Cider .

Honestly, if you want to install and run Windows games I say use BootCamp.

There's still one problem though. I have like 6 GB of free space from 32 GB. 95% of my games are huge in size, that's why I kept trying for weeks to find a TOTALLY FREE program that lets me resize the Boot camp 'Windows' partition from 32 GB to 60 GB or something, but I failed, that's why I gave up and lost hope. Normal PC <3 FTW! Lol

I don't get it. In almost all the posts I see from you you're recommending Windows PCs, saying how they are better at various things, cheaper etc... I'm kinda curious as to why you have a Mac anyway?

Cider is a variant of WINE. WINE is a set of APIs, originally developed for Linux to allow users of that OS to run some Windows applications directly in Linux. Over time, WINE was ported to OS X in several forms, including DarWINE (open source), Codeweavers' CrossOver and Cider. Unfortunately, WINE is pretty hit or miss, and most applications that I've tried to run on it tend to be flaky and unreliable.

Cider is a little different than DarWINE and CrossOver. As I understood it, Cider was marketed toward game developers to help ease the process of porting a game over to OS X. Cider is usually included in the "Mac version" of the game and installs quietly in the background. All the developer needs to do is tweak their existing Windows-based code to work with Cider and then they can sell it as a Mac version.

Honestly, I've been using Windows for quite a long long LONG time, that's why I got bored and decided that I'd switch/convert. Some of my real life friends bought MacBooks and they told me that a Macintosh computer is really cool and you'll never regret buying. That's why I followed them and bought the MBP, I never said I regretted it, but I am just saying that since I'm really used to Windows, I feel like Windows is much better and easier for me. But anyhow, I stopped using Windows on Boot camp, been using Macintosh only for a few weeks now and I am loving it. :]

Don't worry, if I didn't like Macintosh computers, I wouldn't have joined this forum at all, would I?

So cwa, do you think I should go ahead and purchase it? Because I can't seem to find a trial for it, so I'd try it out.

I could be wrong, but looking at their website, Cider really doesn't seem to be a standalone product that an individual could buy to run their favorite games. It looks like they only sell it as a development tool.

Like I said earlier, WINE can be pretty hit or miss. Cider is only successful because the developer usually tweaks their code specifically to run on it.

What I would recommend is that you give DarWINE a shot - it's free, essentially uses the same underlying technologies, and it's easy to install. Try your favorite Windows games with it and see if they run - if they do, even partially, it may be worth your while to take a serious look at CrossOver. CrossOver is a pay-for product, but you get full support and constant updates to help with compatibility issues.

I downloaded DarWINE and copied the two files into Applications. Here is what I got

I can't seem to understand anything, whenever I try to open any of the simple Windows applications in the Finder 'as shown' nothing happens, I don't know why Parallels' icon still appears. I am pretty sure I removed Parallels and everything related to it.

I don't have a lot of experience with DarWINE, but the last time I used it, I could have sworn it had an installer script that had to be run prior to attempting to install a piece of Windows software.

At any point, did you actually open the DarWINE icon itself?
