I wish I hadn't started this . . .

I've created an IMAP account for google mail following all the advice and it's created OK.

My problem is Mail tells me the account is Offline and no amount of 'Take Gmail online' actually results in it happening.

I've even taken the POP account offline in case there was interference, but to no avial. I just have the warning triangle next to the account.

Any ideas as this is really beyond me?

Thanks

Click on the warning triangle and see what it says the problem is. If it says something about 'Invalid Credentials' check this out. You'll probably need to click on the link to clear the CAPTCHA. I had a problem when I first set up Gmail in Mail and this solved it for me.

If the error says nothing about Invalid Credentials, a screenshot of the message may help in figuring out what the problem is.

Ridiculous- adjective: deserving or inviting derision or mockery; absurd. ex. It is ridiculous how many people think the word ridiculous is spelled with an 'e'.

It's worse than that - problem was galloping senility I'm afraid. Changed all my passwords recently due to a problem and applied the wrong one to this account.

It's amazing how it all works when you put the correct one in isn't it - doh!

Sorry to waste your time, but thanks for the response.
