Hello everyone, I just made the switch to a Mac from a PC and I'm trying to be able to view my pictures in Iphoto in a folder view instead of the "event" or "photo" view.

I'm used to just having all my folders listed alphabetically and was wondering if there was any way to do this.

Thanks!

If you are going to use iPhoto, you are going to have to let go of your windows ways and let iPhoto do the work for you. There is no need to go into the finder (as it seems you want to do) to organize your photos. The app does that for you (with input from you, of course). Users are not meant to go into the library in finder and muck about with their photos. Doing so will cause much grief and corrupted files. iPhoto organizes in the finder in its own way, and if it gets changed, the app will not function properly. It won't be able to find your photos. Stay out of the finder!

To organize, from within the app, create folders in the left pane -- for instance "Vacations", then create albums within that folder -- for instancr "Summer 2007", Winter 2008" etc. You can list them in any order you want. Use smart folders and keywords for even more and easier organization. Just don't do anything in the finder.

Oh, and welcome to the world of macs! Your life just got easier!

Events are much like folders, except on steroids. And, like skybolt said, the app does the organizing for you. your job is to enjoy them, edit, make slideshows, etc. You know...

The fun stuff!!

Thanks, that makes more sense. I have created new folders called Vacations, etc and dragged and dropped the "events" into those. Can you please expand on the smart folders and keywords?

thanks!

go to:

File>> New Smart Album

Enter in the folder name.

Then choose an organization combo.

You can choose different combos. For example:

"Photo is Flagged."

So now, when you flag a photo, it will automatically be added to that Smart Folder!

There are loads of different combinations, and you can add as many as you like. Just click the "+" or "-" symbols.

You can also use keywords for your photos. For instance, if "Bill" is in the photo, use the keyword "Bill". If "Dan" is also in the photo you can assign another keyword of "Dan". Then you can create smart folders as shown above, and tell iPhoto to create a folder where the keyword is "Bill". Then, every photo with "Bill" as the keyword will automatically go into that album. Same for "Dan". Then you can easily see all photos of either Bill or Dan.

You could create keywords for each of your vacations -- maybe "San Fran 2007", then whenever you import more photos from that tirp, they will automatically go into the correct album. Or, in that scenario, you could merge events, if you'd rather do that than have a keyword. I am doing this with several thousand old family photos that I have scanned into the computer. I will later be creating DVD's for family members, and will be able to simply use the album appropriate for each of them to create my DVD based onthe keyword(s) I assigned.
