I would like to make it so that my pictures are automatically imported to iphoto.
I've never used applescript so if anyone could help that would be awesome!

Have a dig around in Automator rather than Applescript if you've never used Applescript before.

There are many pre-defined actions to work with iPhoto.

Once you have a working workflow save it as a Plugin, plug in for folder actions and choose your downloads folder. Everytime you add a file to the downloads it will run your workflow
