simple notepad, word processor

I am using Open Org Suite in preference to pages. But I would love to have a small program that would load quickly on the desktop that I could use to take notes. I am sure there are several and I can try them all.

My current GUI editor of choice (I use the terminal version constantly for work..just open a terminal and type "vi" without the quotes)
