now that im on a mac, is there a software out there that is similar to it?

I second the Colloquy vote. Also, be sure to go into the "Interface" pane in the preferences and check the box next to "Show Notices as Private Chat." Growl is very nice for many things, but IRC channel notices you might be getting when asking for information you actually need to read and use later is not one of those things.
