microsoft word 2008

I have never had a mac before and running word on my macbook pro is really weird. It shows up really small and on one side of the screen...I don't mind it because I can read it fine and like how it doesn't take up my entire screen but it says its at 100% view but it clearly is not. The set up is set standard but and the text is set at 12 point but it does not look size 12 whatsoever....any way to change this or at least an explanation of why this happens?
