Technical Problem?

So I do work for a friend of mine who has a mac laptop running os x, laptop model I assume isn't relative ( and I really dont know without looking at it ).

The situation is that somehow, safari got removed ( as far as I can see ). I've looked through all of the applications on the system, as well as attempted to re-install safari - at which time I was told that it was already installed.

I did a search on the system for anything named safari and turned up a few .inf files, a few office files, and the files that I had on my flash drive.

I'm a windows technician so you have to excuse my novice here, but so far I can't find any way to remove an application on this thing, and I'm at a total loss. Thanks for any advice.

My advice if you're sure you can't find it anywhere (I assumed when you say you searched for it you used spotlight, which would find it if it where anywhere on the system) is to delete any of the app support files you find and then try to reinstall it, because in theory those preferences and cache files could make the computer think safari is installed. Once you get rid of those, try reinstalling it. If you still have a problem I would go to apple because it would have to be on the system somewhere for it not to reinstall properly.

Just make sure you're careful when deleting the application support files.

Thanks much mike,

I'll take a pass at it with spotlight ( I was using the Finder search - probably useless? ) and take a good look at whatever app files I'm about to delete. If I don't make any progress you'll hear from me. Thanks again.

Select a random .html file and right click on it. You should get a list of apps to open that file. Is Safari on that list and when selected, does safari launch?

have you looked in both Hard disk > Applications

and

User Folder > Applications

Haven't given the right click idea a pass yet, but I ran a search with spotlight, I've been through the apps folder, and after remembering that OS X is built on the linux kernel, I started up a console and ran a grep for safari on the whole box and turned up nothing.

Tried to install firefox but it is shooting back at me with a strange error after program startup, have to figure out a way to try and reinstall that too ( How do I uninstall something off of this thing? ). I'll download the NON-beta firefox and give that a spin as soon as I figure out how to remove the one I did install. If anyone has any further suggestions/tips please let me know. Thanks much.

Download Pacifist and use it to grab off of the restore disks the Safari package to reinstall it.
