Safari & Mail not working right

My PB has been acting strange the past day.

I can no longer drag & drop pictures from Safari to my desktop. When I right click and try to save a pic to my desktop it gives me the following error message:

"Safari failed to save the file “logo.gif” to the downloads folder."

Now that's not a huge issue, but my Mail is no longer working. It isn't receiving any new messages eventhough there are new messages in my accounts. I've gone through the normal FAQ checks, but those don't do a thing. When I go to preferences in Mail and try to exit, I get this following message:

"Writing your preferences to disk has failed. Your preferences may not have been saved. The permissions on ~/Library/Preferences may be wrong or your disk may be full."

When I've tried using the Help Browser, it isn't working properly either. It will open, but the menus won't open when I click on one of the links.

Finally, twice yesterday my computer froze up. The first time it came out of it after 5 minutes or so, but the second time I had to force restart it.

I think these problems are related since they both started last night. Resetting my computer didn't help. My internal hard drive has 30+gigs of space left. All of my software is current too. I'm on a 17" PB, 1gig ram, 1.5GHz G4. I've had my activity monitor running and it looks like nothing is taking up too much memory. If anyone has some tips, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Dub

Since the message said your permissions might be awry, go to Disk Utility in the Utilities folder and run the permissions fix.

If you haven't done so, you could run the system's built-in repair program. If you aren't sure how, instructions are in this post.
