Screen Capture With An Open API

I am developer looking for some screen capture video software (produces an mp4 file) that has an open API. I want to be able to capture and record anything you can see on your screen, along with audio from any compatible source. I am looking to write a plugin in for MAC power point and keynote that triggers the start and stop of a capture. Does anyone know of screen capturing software that has an open API?

Thanks!
