Upgrading from 10.5.6 to 10.5.7 from the apple menu does the upgrade to Safari automatically. You may have upset something by running a Safari 3.2.3 upgrade over the top. In your scene i would download the 10.5.7 combo updater here, and run that over your current set up and that should sort Safari 3 and then try your luck with the Safari 4 beta.

I jumped at the beta when it came out, shortly realizing a big bug. When I ever go on a flash or Java orientated page, eg: Youtube, Google Video, Gaming websites or most other pages it says this:
Bad Request

I luckily had Firefox installed and have to use it until the non-beta version is released.
I downloaded it also. I still have to use the "merge windows" feature off & on - don't know what's up with that! Also, I wish the tabs were not gray - hard to see since they are the same color as the bookmark bar. Mainly when I'm using my laptop - my iMac is so much bigger, that it's not quite so hard.
There is probably a way to change their color, just haven't had time to research it.
Yeah, I think the Top Site feature is annoying as well. I just don't use it.
Safari worked fine for me up until this latest update, so I've decided to start using firefox and it's way better.
I'm finished with apple, I'll never buy another apple computer again.
I'm also finished with apples forums, helpful as they have been I'm sick of mods deleting my threads there for no good reason. I am ... was also STU9000 there and I requested that they delete my account in protest at the way they have responded to the numerous problem I have encountered with my macbook.
While I'm not leaving any forums, I totally agree that Safari 4 is a disaster. And now we can't go back to version 3?? Nice - not. I don't particularly care for FF as a whole, but guess I have to use it now. ugh.

If you can tolerate Windows, that's probably a good idea. Macs aren't for everyone, and you can usually pick up a Windows machine for considerably less than a comparable Mac.
Fortunately for you, you're not stuck with your machine as Macs tend to maintain their value quite well. You should consider putting it up on Craigslist and/or eBay. It should sell for more than enough to get a brand new Windows notebook. And if you do it now, you should be able to get a free upgrade to Windows 7 as I understand it.
Well I am keeping my mac, it might not be up to scratch, but it is still better than vista by a long shot!
I was thinking of maybe moving to linux eventually.
What amazes me in all this, is that they are saying it is a beta update, as though somehow that explains why there are so many bugs. I mean what is so different from safari 3.0?
Surely it is possible to release an update of this that at the very least works as well as 3.0! 3.0 worked pretty good for me actually, and I fail to see what the point in this update was at all anyway!

Come on, it can't be that difficult to do!
4.0 was in beta for quite awhile and just recently the full release came out, this thread is quite old and I guess people are just continuing it to discuss their niggles with the production version.
Safari has always been a mixed bag for me. As many times as I've tried to use it, I always come back to Firefox (particularly 3.5 which has full gesture support amongst a number of add-ons that aren't available for Safari).
Although I like OS X, it has long irritated me that there are some flaws (which Apple apologists will point out are not flaws, as much as me not bending to Apple's will) which Apple just won't address. In particular, I can not figure out what Safari's logic is in opening new pages in a tab. Sometimes it will, sometimes it won't, even with the setting turned on. I despite multiple concurrent browser windows.
Anyway, lots of people seem to like Safari and wholeheartedly believe that it's the fastest browser on earth. I just don't see it.
Until the day that Safari stops "painting" pages instead of just displaying them in one fell swoop, I'll stick to Firefox.

It stopped doing that for a short while after the 10.5.7 update, but that effect was so bad in the latest safari update I just had no choice but to file for a divorce.

If you obtained Safari 4.0.1 via the Leopard 10.5.7 update, then you shouldn't experience any problems with it. They've resolved any issues there were with Safari 4 beta. I know, I tried 4 beta and it was a mess. Uninstalled it and was pleasantly surprised with 4.0.1 that came with the 10.5.7 update.
Anyways, found this on the apple site. Don't know if it will necessarily "work" as far as replacing/removing safari 4 and reverting to 3.2.3. But whatever.... Try it at your own risk, I guess.
