So, before I do anything drastic I thought that I would follow sage advice and do firmware/software updates all round.

First with the Samsung. Although I can connect the TV to Ethernet and download a useless bunch of widgets,it won't give me a software upgrade option via ethernet..only USB.

There are 2 updates available on their support/download page and the procedure is to download them to desktop, drag them onto a stick and then double-click them. Both are .exe files and neither will install onto my USB stick so the TV can't find find a file on them when I'm in the upgrade menu.

Secondly, the Apple TV. The link describing the USB upgrade via iTunes looks good but none of my leads fit. I have plenty which appear to be micro but are slightly larger and won't fit the Apple.

Ho Hum.

Agggh, how frustrating.
If you lived nearby I could help too, with cables and the .exe.
I hate all these USB cables of varying sizes. I suspect the ATV uses a micro mini usb (grrr).
Here's an idea though. I can unstuff .exe in windows/parallels, so if you can give me links, I can download the updates, unstuff them, and then email you the files to copy to usb?
As for the cable, a shopping trip I guess, what a pain.

I am looking at the 2 firmware updates, I guess if I download full software I could put the TV back to factory or even shop mode so just the firmware updates should be fine? One has to be installed before the other and the file versions are T-CHL7DEUC-3000.2 and T-CHL7DEUC-3001.1

I am indeed just going shopping with respect to the cable!!!

Kev,

Yesterday I emailed Samsung Support and here is their response just in:

"Dear Liam

Thank you for contacting Samsung.

I am sorry to hear you are experiencing problems while trying to download the firmware.

As you are using a Mac computer the firmware will not download, so what I am going to do is send you out the firmware on a USB stick but it can take up to 7-10 working daysto arrive.

The only other option is to download the firmware on a friend’s computer.

I hope this helps however if you require any further assistance, please contact Samsung again and we will be more than happy to help.

Kind regards

Nathan

SAMSUNG Customer Support Centre"

Also, as I was leaving I was explaining the issue to my daughter and irony of ironies the Micro-USB lead that came with her Samsung Android phone fits the Apple TV service port !!

While I realize this is resolved, I've curious (and really, I'm hugely irritated with companies, like Sony where I first ran into this) that ONLY support Windows (let me tell you just how LAME that is for archive, when .zip is the industry standard). So I downloaded the T-CHL7DEUC-3001.1 file, and extracted it successfully using The Unarchiver.

Yea, I just HAD to resolve that when I still had a Sony BD player. Not even my work machine is Windows, and I HATE running VM's for something so stupidly minor.

Kev,
I struggled downloading the file from Fileserve, I kept getting loads of pop-ups and iLivid SetUp files instead.
Having read Dysfunction's post I've just downloaded The Unarchiver from the App Store and it's automatically converted the files.

I've just hooked up the ATV2 ,after it's restore, to the Denon with HDMI only and no joy. Next step is the firmware upgrade on the TV.

That's weird, you shouldn't get that from the second link I sent. Anyway, now you have them anyway, so fingers crossed it works!

Update.

Hello folks.
Just to keep you posted. I got a set of component leads and hooked them up from the 'monitor out' outputs on the back of the Denon to the component in on the back of the Samsung. The Denon appears to imply that they are assignable to a HDMI input but they aren't. To be honest I dropped the idea and parked the ATV again.

Then I hooked the ATV up directly via the same HDMI cable to another TV, a Toshiba, and I got video but no audio..that is until I manipulated the HDMI plugs about in the sockets and finally got some music!!!

I've now managed to set up the ATV at least and prove that all is well with it. I invested in a new budget v1.3b cable and the plugs now sit securely in each socket and it all works fine but in the wrong room with the wrong set-up!

The next plan is to hook it up with the new cable only to the back of the Denon.
Samsung still haven't sent the USB stick.

I can't stop laughing.

I just hooked up my ATV with the v1.3b cable to the Denon and it all works perfectly!!!

What a mullarkey that was! Anyone having similar problems I would suggest considers upgrading their HDMI cable first before anything else.

Anyway thanks for all your efforts..I'm just going to sit down now and get to grips with my Christmas present at long last.

Absolutely Kev, something so simple

Music is great and I've just been streaming my digital copy of Inception from iTunes via ATV and I am mightily impressed....not quite Blu-Ray but still good quality with Dolby Digital audio too.
