Crossfading on itunes doesn't work at all

as in title... I set in preferences cross fade songs on 10 seconds, tick all 3 boxes for cross fade, sound check and sound enhancer, but the cross fade does not work, the other two are just fine. any thoughts?

What did you do to make it work? Was it just a case of letting iTunes process all the songs for sound enhancer?
