Guitar sounds without effects on monitors

 ...I am having a weird problem... i am using garageband 11, have a macbook pro 13"... and i have an M-Audio Fast track Interface... now every time I want to apply an effect to the guitar from the garageband guitar effects it sound clean!! :S... without any modifications... but when a play the recording the effect sounds... but I am not able to hear it before and modify it because I cannot hear it.... is very Frustrating... the input and output is placed on the M-audio Fast track, the monitor is on in the AMP in garageband/// the song plays ok... and i can hear the guitar... but no effects applied... i am out of ideas...
