I have an I-mac and keep my I-Tunes music on a portable hard drive. When I want to create a play list, I am still loading the music back to my hard drive! Is there a solution whereby I don't duplicate the music and "clog" my hard drive?

A playlist id just a collection of 'pointers' to the original files.

How do you know they are being copied to your iMac hard disk?

External hard disk acquisition addict - but admitting the problem is the first step to a robust backup

You just need to change the default location of your iTunes library. Read this how to:

UltraNewb: How to move your iTunes library to an external drive

I have mine on an external drive, always have.
