Hi I'm new on the imac scene and I need to put a something together for my daughters dance troop. Basically I want to take a 2 minute clip from 5 different tracks and put them together as one track (maybe add a couple of sound effects if poss.)

Could any one suggest a good (and simple) software package for this.

Cheers in advance.

hello and welcome to Mac-Forums.

The program you are looking for is Garage Band and if you have iLife its already on your Mac !

Apple - GarageBand - Learn to play music and record on your Mac.

You can convert your song to mp3 file when you click the 'share' menu and choose 'send song to itunes'.

I think you might have an easier time with audacity than garage band doing edits like that. Make sure to install lame as well so you can export to a wide variety of proproatory formats.

Audacity: Free Audio Editor and Recorder

Download the beta version as it is Mac friendly. The stable version won't even run on many Mac versions.

Audacity: How do I download and install the LAME MP3 encoder?

This is to install the plugin.
