itunes transfer problem

I have a PC and a mac. Both are authorized both can see and play each others libraries.

But I cannot do the drag and drop functionality; when i try to "pick up" a song it just refuses! I dont know whether theres a special setting? I'm rather confused. I can still "pick up" songs in the local library; just ones in the "shared library" i cannot.

How does this typically work? Is it the case that I see both my shared and my local comptuer in the "shared" part of the itunes, and then I just transfer the files from one to the other? Right now I only see the remote computer in the shared part.

That's Apple's mechanism to prevent copying of music that's not legal. They're protecting themselves. The easiest way is just to have all the music on both machines.

Music over the network through iTunes is only streamed. You cannot copy music from computer to computer through iTunes unless you are using the new "Home Sharing" feature of iTunes 9.

Finally, they come out with that! What the heck was the point of the streaming thing anyway? It's only on the network afterall.

Allowing people to copy music from each other with the old non-authenticated way (unless a password was set) would have made iTunes a file sharing app essentially. Before something like HS could come into place, Apple would have had to create an authentication system which they have and they would have had to get label approval because now, AFAIK, you can buy one copy of a song and share it with all the computers in your house which cuts into label revenues.

In iTunes 9 only

Works the same whether on Windows or Mac
Under Shared, highlight the library you want to get items from
Then highlight the selections on the right that you wish to move
Drag and drop them to your local Library at the top left

So far it seems to be pretty smooth. Been home sick all week, so I played with it for about 4 hours yesterday. See my little pictorial review of their new LP version of albums I did yesterday.

Streaming between all my machines works great - moving songs and videos between machines works great. So far I like it. Like the new layout of the store also. And with the LP's at only $1 or so more than the standard album price, they may be getting some of the cash that's been going to Amazon.

I have 2 Mac's, 1 XP, 1 Win 7 & 1 Win Home Server machine.

And I have already updated and synced both iPhones and synced my nano with 9.

yeah, I"m using itunes 9 home sharing.

it wont let me transfer any files between computers...

At first, maybe i thought the reason it wouldnt let me transfer the files was maybe cause I hadnt bought them through itunes? this seems not to be the case...

I would LOVE this feature... if only it would work!

one more thing:

it says here

iTunes 9: Understanding Home Sharing

that you can "import"... for some reason I do not have any "import" button in the bottom right hand corner when navigating a shared computer.

weird. So I can see the computer, stream the music from that computer, however, I just can't transfer the files as they intended.... i wonder why not...!

You must enable Home Sharing on both machines with the same iTunes account. Just having a shared library will not enable the ability to move files between them.
