Hello there

Really sorry if this has been covered before but I have purchased the new full version of Logic Studio and am in the process of gathering the funds to get a macbook to run it on

However, I'm very new to this game and was just wondering if anyone could recommend the ideal mac for me? I'm afraid it will have to be a MacBook as it is portable and because of space constraints at home

The Macbook Pro seems to be the obvious "best one" for the full logic but it is a little pricey so is it possible to use Logic on a Macbook without problems? And if so, what are the best Macbooks to go for?

Again. sorry about the less than "techy" nature of this post - as I said I am new to this -but any help at all would be fantastic

Logic will run on the MacBook without any problems. It has optical in/out as well as a fast proccy and RAM. The only thing that goes against the MacBook is the screen size, and should you need to connect some firewire devices, the MacBook will fall short. I'd say the $1300 MacBook with 4GB RAM should be good enough.

Thanks very much for the help!!

I've read a lot on the internet that a big problem for some people using Logic on new Macbooks is the lack of Firewire.

I've looked this up but is a bittoo techy for me

Anyone able to shed some light on the uses/necessity of Firewire?

Firewire is an alternative to USB that is considered superior for audio equipment as data is sent in a continuous stream rather than as individual packets as with USB.

So some higher end audio devices are only available in firewire versions.

Fantastic. Thank you very much for the help

Would the lack of Firewire cause any problems should I require a new soundcard?

I've had a recommendation of RME Fireface 400 - just wondering if that would cause any problems

^^ From what I can tell that soundcard requires FireWire to operate. So no, it will not work with the MacBook.

Many thanks folks!

I think I've settled on the 13.3" white Macbook (as it has a Firewire port) with 4GB Ram.

If this is a bad idea then please let me know

Once again, thanks to everybody for your help

I'd opt for a MBP if you're going to get into serious audio editing. It has all the ports, more screen real estate and will be more powerful. If you can't afford a new one, there are always plenty on the secondary market that offer sufficient savings over new, boxed models. Good luck with it all!

Cheers,

I use a black MacBook that's now over 18 months old and I have no problems whatsoever with Logic 8.

I am upgrading to an MBP, but that's more just because I'm greedy

If you're going to install all audio content that comes with Logic then I'd recommend paying a little more for the Pro.
The lack of firewire on the new MacBooks puts me straight off them as I use an M-Audio ProjectMix as my external device and this relies solely on firewire.
If you're using Logic as a power user then you'll most likely be investing in an external device and as stated above, firewire is the way to go.
I reckon the MBP will be better for your needs as it's less likely to go sluggish on you and they look nice and shiny
