Someone took some video footage with a HD Sony video camera. I wanted to edit the footage on my mac. He burned the file on a DVD for me on his PC so I could. My mac says it is an mpeg-1 movie. When I try to open it directly, quicktime says it's not a movie and refuses to open it. VLC will play it however. If I open iMovie and ask it to import the file, it complains that quicktime can not parse it!

So at this point I'm scratching my head and wondering how can I access and edit this file? Any ideas?

thanks,
bshonk

Look at ffmpegX, VLC, Streamclip, maybe iSquint. You want to convert the file, preferable to DV format, so that iMovie can read it.
