WHY is encoding dvds so slow?

I use toast to encode on my macbook, and it takes lik 3hrs 2 encode, then 8mins 2 burn?
Is there ne easier, faster way?

USB hardware encoder from elgato.com speeds up the encoding process

No, video encoding is a VERY processor intensive task

video encoding takes a while....what computer you have also dictates how long it is going to take
