Compiling Net Footage

On YouTube for example there are home made montages and compilations of movie clips, home-made trailers, car crash compilations and 'funniest cat clip' compilations - you get the general idea, but many of these must have been compiled by editing footage found on the net, esp in the case of the latter two.

Is this possible and how?
