Final Cut Express: Why are my clips importing to the canvas pixelated?

In Final Cut Express, why are my clips importing to the canvas pixelated?

The clips look fantastic in the "viewer," but the very same clip in the "canvas" looks significantly more pixelated. Does FCE work better with importing some video settings versus others?
