I am a new mac user and I am trying to upload a short clip from a movie to youtube. The movie is in .mpv file format. imovie does not recognize .mpv files so how do I take a 2 minute clip of the movie without uploading the entire thing?

I was thinking about purchasing a media file converter-->converting the movie to .mp4-->editing the 2 minutes in iMovie-->then uploading the 2 mins of .mp4 to youtube. I am not even sure if that is possible.

Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

update, I just purchased iVideoConverter from the apps store and converted the movie from .mpv to .mp4. iMovie still does not recognize the movie. Any ideas why?

After looking at the converted .mp4 movie in finder it's size is "Zero bytes". Clearly it did not convert it.

I just purchased iVideoConverter
That's a shame.

Download MPEGStreamclip(for free) and open your mpv file. Export to Quicktime using the Apple Intermediate Codec option from the Compression menu. This is iMovie's preferred format, so it should work.
