I have installed a surveillance system at my home. I can get email alerts that show a single JPEG. To see what was recorded, I need to log into the IP Camera. The IP camera is saving the files in .MOV format in a directory that is shown by its web server. There are clickable links for the movie files. I cannot get anything other than the slashed play arrow with my iPhone or iPad. I know the video is fine to play, because I sent the same exact file to myself via email and it plays fine on my iPhone.

Are there any solutions? I want immediate access to fresh files and I have no flexibility on the storage pattern for the .MOV files.

.MOV is not a format. It's a container. All kinds of codecs can be used in a MOV file. But that's just FYI and probably not germane to the issue.

My guess would be that the web server is putting the movies into a Flash player to show them on the web, which of course won't work (for iOS *or* Android -- there's no mobile Flash anymore and iOS never supported it in the first place).

Contact the company and explain how incredibly dumb this is, maybe they'll upgrade the webserver software to use HTML5 as they should have done in the first place.

Or find out if the company has or is developing an Android or iPhone app to show content stored on IP cameras

There is no flash player being called by the link. It is a direct link to the file. It is requiring the device (iPhone) to choose the player for that file type. iPhone response to a direct file opening that it otherwise can play (from an email) is:
