Which settings should I use for phone footage?

It's actually mostly video footage from a typical compact camera so when loaded into FCP it does not fill the widescreen aspect ratio. What settings should I use to avoid having black bars either side of the screen?

Depends on the screen. If your camera has a "16:9" option you'd probably want that.
