I am trying to save a bunch of old svhs tapes. I have purchased this i grabber digtizer which I thought worked but it will only record to the computer and not an external hard drive- which is no good for me. Now I am thinking that I will purchase a vhs-dvd combo player/recorder to duplicate. But I am weary of doing that too because I have read reviews stating that the dvd copy will not play in other players- and I would like it be able to work in my macbook.. I am aware that dvd-R format is not so good, so I am hoping to purchase a combo player that does both the + and the - formats and that the + will work in my macbook.. Any help or thoughts is appreciated..thanks

Buy the dvd recorder, it's the cheapest and best way to do this by far.
I have never had a copy not play, unless you fail to finalise it. The Macbook will be fine with them, I'm certain (just use a good brand of disc) and if it doesn't play that disc, you can allways drag and drop the VIDEO_TS folder to your desktop and burn a new disc.
