Novice Macbook air user wants to play video using VLC medium to Samsung Hd readyTV? Not sure of what adapters needed? any advice welcome

You probably need a mini display port cable -> HDMI cable or whatever input your TV supports.

Possibly a 3.5mm audio cable from your Macs headphone socket to an audio in on the TV, as well.
