I have a DVD with files ending in m2ts.modd and .moff, as well as AVCHD. I'm unable to view all of the files on my mac and am not video (or even computer) savvy enough to know my next move. I'd like to convert them to something I can view as well as work with in iMovie. I've read several posts referring to software that will do such, but I don't want to pay a lot of money for something that will be seldom used. Is Handbrake what I need, or . . .? Any and all suggestions would be welcome.

There's no solution I know of that is going to fix this issue (a DVD full of non-standard, non-editing-format video files) without paying, sorry. I don't think Handbrake will do you any good at all on these.

Appreciate your reply, even if it wasn't what I wanted to hear The video was shot by a friend on a Sony (minicam?) and he didn't save them all in a format we could view, although some were AVCHD and playback was not an issue.

The AVCHD ones may work just fine in iMovie, which accepts some forms of AVCHD. You can try downloading the free MPEG Streamclip and the $30 MPEG-2 Playback Component from Apple to see if that will help with the other formats, but there's a risk it won't work.

Read this blog post and see if it will work for you. Costs nothing to try.
