Converting MKV files
Hi guys

How do I convert MKV files to AVI or some other format that I can burn to DVD?

Also, what the heck is an MKV file?

Handbrake will convert to MPEG, and older versions to AVI.
MKV is just a container, a codec for movie files, and is high quality.

Hi, MKV files are usually high quality containers for h.264 video, usually used for making back-ups of Blu-Ray or HD video. I would guess that converting them to AVI (also a container) will reduce the quality. If you are playing them on a Mac, I would leave them as MKV (VLC Player will play them OK). If you have a stand alone device that requires AVI then convert them. Hope that helps.

im not sure if this helps, but if you have the original dvd, the quickest way to get a copy is to rip an iso file then burn the iso to another disk. iso files rip in like 15 minutes compared to an encode or decode but the file result is typical 4gigs so unpractical for storage. but if all you want is another disk of something its really fast compared to dealing with conversions.
