Isolating small segment from imported audio

Suppose I import or add an audio clip from iMovie sound effects into a project - maybe it's 30 secs long - but I only want to use a small segment of the audio somewhere in the middle and discard the rest.

Can this be done and if so, how? Ideally I would like to copy/paste this to synchronise with a video clip. Is it possible?

I'm most grateful to anyone taking the trouble to help me out here.

Which iMovie are you using? You can do it easily with iMovie6 and 11. In both you just import the clip and then you either trim it or adjust the volume to zero either side of the bit that you want.

I've got iMovie '11.

I understand, MightyGem, about selecting one bit and reducing the sound to zero on either side. That's really helpful; but I want to go further if I can - namely - copy that single bit I want and use the same bit in two or three other parts of the project. Akin to Copy & Paste, I guess.

Can that be done?

Yes. When you chosen the bit that you want, place the mouse over the end of the audio clip and it will change to a vertical line with a double headed arrow. You can now drag the ends of the clip in to your selected portion. Then move the mouse over the clip until you get a hand. Then you can select the clip and do Copy and Paste via the Edit menu.
