does anyone know where i can find a free mpeg-2 to imovie format converter for mac os x 10.4, thanks!!!!!

VLC *may* be able to do this, but it's challenging.

I would recommend instead the MPEG-2 Playback component ($30) from Apple, accompanied by the free MPEG-2 Streamclip as a much more elegant solution.

Surely this video footage you want to convert is worth this incredibly modest cost?

I'll second that combination. I've done it before and I think I was on 10.4 at the time. It should work fine. Apple's MPEG-2 Playback Component is well worn the money because it opens up a number of related formats.
