Rip DVD to MOV

I worked on a film, and the director has asked me to cut a trailer for it. He gave me DVD (with menu, not straight video), I watched it, wrote down shots and dialogue that are usuable, etc, now it's time to cut it.

How do I rip the movie to a usable video file that I can cut in FCP?

YadeX and/or MPEG Streamclip
Guide: Edit footage from DVD with Mac
Then you'll have an MPEG file.
Does iMovie handle MPEG format? If not, convert to Quicktime after extraction.

Handbrake should do what you want.
