Codec for imovie?

I've been trying to use Imovie on mac OS 10.4 to make Anime Music Videos, but a lot of the videos I have are in either .avi or .mkv format, and I cant seem to import them into imovies. a friend of mine says I need to download the codec to do it, but I dont know where to find that kind of stuff. does anyone know, or am I even right about that? any help would be appreciated.

You can use MPEGStreamclip to convert the avi files, either to DV, which iMovie uses, or to Quicktime, using the Apple Intermediate Codec compression option.

For the mkv files, if you install Perian, they should play in Quicktime, and you should then be able to save them as a DV file or Quicktime file.
