Hello,

I'm new to the Mac world, just recently switched from a PC and so far it's been a nice transition to my new MBP 15". However, I have MPEG-2 video files that I transferred to my mac that wont play on QT or iMovie. How do I convert these files without paying the extra $20 for the Apple QT converter program on top of the large amount of money I already paid for this notebook. Please help.

My Sony Handycam is listed as compatible for iMovie. Does this mean when I transfer my files from my video camera to my mac they will not be in the MPEG-2 format? Can anyone give me the steps on transferring these files?

Any help will be much appreciated,
Thank You.

Me too. Have same camcorder and MBA won't recognize the camera. I'll tag along only to watch, not hijack, this thread.

I'm pretty sure that you're going to have to pay the $20, which is peanuts compared to the cost of your MBP.

To the original poster...does your Mac even recognize your camera when you connect via USB? Mine doesn't

Does this camera have an SD card...? If so...put it in the reader....open imovie...and select import movies from files....look for the sd card and import the clips. They will be transcoded to AIC...make a movie /export...or just take the files from the card and then transcode with Handbrake...

Macbook Air. No SD slot, and the camera uses Pro Duo memory.

So.. if you connect the camera to your MBA and open imovie ( without trying to import any other way ) once in imovie...can you click on file and select import...or import from camera...? Basically...what I am saying is to try and import directly into imovie and not any other way that is available...

Nope. iPhoto/iMovie do not see nor allow an import cause it can't see the device. Laptop doesn't see ANY external drive in Finder or any app although USBProber does see them.
